LEXINGTON COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA – A news article published on wltx.com reports that the South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal wrong-way accident. The troopers are trying to ascertain how the wrong-way driver entered I-26 and ended up driving against the flow of traffic on the interstate. Tragically, the South Carolina Highway Patrol announced that both drivers involved in the head-on collision passed away. The victims were identified as a woman from Columbia and a teenager from Blythewood.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol shut down a portion of I-26’s eastbound traffic lanes for several hours to conduct an investigation and for emergency crews to clear the accident scene.
South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Lance Corporal Nick Pye stated that the wrong-way accident occurred at around 5:30 in the morning by mile-marker 119. The news report stated that the accident was near the exit to Swansea and U.S. 21.
Lance Corporal Pye reported that a Hyundai car was traveling eastbound along on I-26 when it was hit by a Jeep that was heading in the wrong direction. The two drivers were tragically killed as a result of the head-on collision. Lance Corporal Pye did not have any further information concerning how the wrong-way collision occurred or how the driver of the Jeep ended up driving down the wrong side of Interstate-26.
The fatal interstate accident investigation had continued through the pre-dawn hours until approximately 9:30 in the morning.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol acceded to the Lexington County coroner to identify those who were tragically killed in the wrong-way accident.
