According to an article published on whio.com, Ohio State Highway Patrol Lieutenant Geoffrey Freeman provides some helpful tips on what drivers should do when faced with a wrong-way driver.  Wrong-way accidents happen suddenly.  However, there are two important countermeasures that can help protect you and your passengers when confronted with a wrong-way driver. 

According to Lt. Geoffrey Freeman, if a wrong-way driver is driving toward you, drive defensively by slowing down and attempt to move out of the way.  These incidents occur quickly, and there won’t be much time to react.  If possible, make every attempt to get out of the path of the oncoming vehicle.  You can also honk or flash your lights to get their attention. If you witness a wrong way driver, always call 911 as soon as possible and report the wrong-way driver. 

So far, the Ohio Department of Transportation has reported 40 wrong-way accidents this year, and we are only halfway through 2021. 

Statistically, wrong-way collisions are 40 times more fatal than any other type of motor vehicle collision.  They are significantly more deadly because the vehicles hit each other head-on ,often at interstate speeds. 

There are preventative measures being taken to warn and deter wrong-way drivers. Tragic, Deadly Wrong-way Collision on I-26 in Lexington, South Carolina

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA – A news article published on wltx.com reports that the South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal wrong-way accident. The troopers are trying to ascertain how the wrong-way driver entered I-26 and ended up driving against the flow of traffic on the interstate. Tragically, the South Carolina Highway Patrol announced that both drivers involved in the head-on collision passed away. The victims were identified as a woman from Columbia and a teenager from Blythewood.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol shut down a portion of I-26’s eastbound traffic lanes for several hours to conduct an investigation and for emergency crews to clear the accident scene.

South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Lance Corporal Nick Pye stated that the wrong-way accident occurred at around 5:30 in the morning by mile-marker 119. The news report stated that the accident was near the exit to Swansea and U.S. 21.

Lance Corporal Pye reported that a Hyundai car was traveling eastbound along on I-26 when it was hit by a Jeep that was heading in the wrong direction. The two drivers were tragically killed as a result of the head-on collision. Lance Corporal Pye did not have any further information concerning how the wrong-way collision occurred or how the driver of the Jeep ended up driving down the wrong side of Interstate-26.

The fatal interstate accident investigation had continued through the pre-dawn hours until approximately 9:30 in the morning.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol acceded to the Lexington County coroner to identify those who were tragically killed in the wrong-way accident.

Wrong-Way Crash Tragically Kills One in Atlanta, Georgia (GA)

June 10, 2021 – ATLANTA, GA- Ajc.com writes that a driver was killed in a crash this week in Atlanta. The incident occurred when a driver in an SUV reportedly made a U-turn and began to head against the flow of traffic on the Downtown Connector. The vehicle was identified as a Mercedes-Benz SUV.*

The Mercedes collided with another vehicle in the middle of the night and led to the closure of the southbound lanes for about four hours. The road was reopened in the early morning. The wrong-way SUV struck a Hyundai Sonata that was traveling just north of University Avenue. The person in the sedan died at the scene. The individual operating the Mercedes was identified as a man in the 20s. Reports indicate that the man is in critical condition and broke both of his legs in the collision. He was transported to the Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. The crash is the second wrong-way collision to occur on the Downtown Connector in the span of just one week. In the other crash, which also took place close to University Avenue, both drivers died from their injuries.

Wrong-way driving happens when a motorist is traveling against the flow of traffic. When a driver makes this type of error on a divided road such as a freeway, the consequences are extremely severe because the vehicles are traveling at high rates of speed.
